Inside’s Outsiders, exposition, characters and conflict

Among the ranks of Dismantle there is a young man named Jerry.
He’s categorized into the lovingly named “time astray youth” -
born into the technological marvels of Memorial,
but finding less value with its integrated daily use.

If you, a stranger, were to ask Jerry why he joined Dismantle,
then he would answer that it’s because humans can’t be dependent
on their machines that they built to operate everyday functions,
on research that’s difficult to understand, on people not seen.

But if you ask anyone else that’s associated with him,
well, the first thing they’ll mention is his affinity for planning.
Leafleting the nihilistically demonstrated sectors,
utilizing connections to disrupt power to the city.

Dig deeper, though, and you’ll hear rumors of his troubled childhood,
where he was isolated during his lower division years
because of his meek demeanor coupled with an odd interest:
people.
Instead of participating, he watched as if they were research.

This isolation continued into his upper divisions,
with the only modifications being the intensity,
both of the tactics used to other him during learning hours,
as well as his feelings on his peer’s unrelenting behaviors.

Even now, in his 20s, his Dismantle colleagues feel unease
when they have any sort of interaction that must involve him,
some will even speak of feeling nervousness by just seeing him,
as if they’re lost in a jungle and being stalked by a panther.

Despite this, Dismantle acknowledges his vast contributions.
So, it has been decided that he will lead a major demonstration
where dialogue will be open to promote movement awareness
and recruit more members into the ranks for a massive push.

So, Jerry will be flung into the spotlight for the time being.
He feels a nervous, excited energy building in his gut,
though it’s difficult for him to discern from his settled anger.
What an exhilarating opportunity for him to prove,

he’s not an abnormality,
he’s capable of belonging.
